Perseverance"Well, it was up to him to build the fire over again, and this second time there must be no failure. Even if he succeeded, he would most likely lose some toes… Such were his thoughts, but he did not sit and think them. He was busy all the time they were passing through his mind. He made a new foundation for a fire, this time in the open, where no treacherous tree could blot it out" (505).
The man here is at a very difficult time and on his journey and he is in great physical danger. His fire is put out the first time and instead of giving up and dying right there, he builds another one. He doesn't think about giving up and keeps going even though he is in a great amount of stress. |
Man vs. Nature
"The thought of it drove him on, but he ran no more than a hundred feet, when he staggered and pitched headlong. It was his last panic. When he had recovered his breath and control, he sat up and entertained in his mind the conception of meeting death with dignity" (509).
In this quote, the man is running in his last attempt at saving himself. He gives into his panic but then decides to stop running and meet his death with dignity. The man has done all that he can to save himself but nature is going to win over him. The snow and cold kill him which means that nature won over man.
